According to the reports, the FDA, which is the Food and Drug Administration in the United States, is taking some action against the dietary supplements for various reasons. It is also sending the warning letters to some of the companies that claim to not only prevent but also treat certain diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, among others, despite having no proof at all, regarding the same. The action which is being taken by the agency is the need of the hour and the agency announced the details about the same on this Monday.
The agency has also decided to update some of the policies of the agency on the dietary supplements and it has announced that this is certainly going to be one of the most important modernizations of the regulation in the span of last 25 years. Further details about the same were provided by the FDA commissioner named Dr. Scott Gottlieb.
The dietary supplements are generally not reviewed by the agency before entering the market, but the agency can definitely intervene when it is observed that some of the products are either unsafe or carry some misleading claims about the health benefits, and this is exactly what the agency is doing right now.
The main reason behind this action being taken by the FDA is that these false claims can have some serious effects as people can forgo some safe treatments in many cases. Nearly 4 out of every 5 adults in the country take dietary supplements, as per the statement from the FDA. The agency has now sent the warning letters to nearly 12 companies which are involved in this particular situation. In addition to this, the agency is now going after some other companies as well which give misleading claims in case of some other products.
